Most of what comes out of a house can go on the truck and straight to the transfer station. A few things can't, and they are exactly the things people most want gone: old mattresses, dead refrigerators, and the big TV that has been in the basement since 2009. Connecticut handles each of these separately. Here is what that means in plain terms.
Mattresses and box springs
Connecticut has a statewide mattress recycling program. Mattresses and box springs are collected separately from household trash and taken apart so the steel, foam and wood can be reused. That is a good thing, but it means your town's bulk pickup may not take them, and transfer stations handle them as a separate category with a per-piece fee. We pick them up from the bedroom, not the curb, and handle the drop-off.
Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers
Anything with refrigerant in it has to have the gas recovered by a certified handler before it can be scrapped. You cannot just put a fridge out with the trash. We take refrigerant appliances to the right drop-off and the small extra fee is built into your quote. Empty the fridge before we arrive and we'll do the rest. Washers, dryers, stoves and dishwashers have no refrigerant and go straight to metal recycling.
TVs, monitors, computers and printers
Electronics are banned from Connecticut landfills and are collected as e-waste. Old tube TVs are heavy and contain lead. Flat screens are lighter but still have to be recycled. We take them all. If it is a working TV, tell us and we will try to donate it instead.
What we can't take
Paint, solvents, oil, pesticides, chemicals, propane tanks, fuel, asbestos and medical waste are hazardous waste and have to go through your town's HHW program. Not sure about something? Text us a photo and we'll tell you where it should go.
The simple version
Put everything in one place, or don't even do that. Text photos of the mattress, the fridge and the TV to (475) 201-7539 and we will give you one price to carry all of it out and dispose of each item the right way.
