Taking down an old shed or deck: do it yourself or hire a demolition company?

· by Michael Palmieri

Weathered wooden shed in a Connecticut backyard before demolition

Every yard in Connecticut seems to have one: the shed that leans, the deck with the soft spot, the fence that fell over in the last storm, the above-ground pool nobody has opened in three summers. Taking it down looks like a Saturday with a sledgehammer. Sometimes it is. Here is how to decide, and what to expect if you hire it out.

What the job actually involves

The teardown is the quick part. A small shed comes apart in an hour or two with a reciprocating saw and a pry bar. What eats the weekend is everything after that: pulling hundreds of nails and screws, cutting lumber into pieces that fit in a vehicle, separating pressure-treated wood (most transfer stations handle it differently), dealing with the roofing, the concrete footings or pavers under it, and then making three or four trips to the dump and paying by weight each time. Decks add ledger boards bolted to the house, joist hangers and posts set in concrete. Pools add a liner, a steel wall and a lot of sand.

When doing it yourself makes sense

  • It is small, dry and free-standing, like a metal garden shed or a short fence run.
  • You already own a truck or trailer and know your town's transfer station rules.
  • You have help. Deck boards and shed roofs are not a one-person carry.
  • Nothing is attached to the house and no utilities run to it.

When to hire a demolition company

  • The structure is attached to the house, elevated, or rotten enough that you cannot trust where you step.
  • There is electrical running to it. Sheds and hot tub decks often have a line nobody remembers.
  • It is heavy or awkward: hot tub surrounds, concrete pads, railroad-tie walls, pools.
  • You do not have a way to haul several hundred pounds of debris, or the time to make the trips.
  • You want it gone this week and the yard clean behind it.

In most of these cases, hiring out costs about what the dump fees and rental equipment would have cost you anyway, and you keep your weekend and your back.

What a professional brings

The right tools, enough hands, a truck sized for the load, and the disposal handled correctly: pressure-treated lumber, roofing, metal and clean fill each go where they belong. The crew checks for wiring before the first cut, protects the lawn and the siding, and leaves the footprint raked. You get one price for the demolition and the haul-away together, not a demolition quote plus a dumpster rental plus a cleanup.

Why a small local crew costs less than the big names

The national junk and demolition franchises price in their overhead: franchise fees, branded fleets, call centers, marketing budgets and a sales process that starts high. Mr. Nobody Dump Runs is one owner, one crew and a green truck based in Shelton. There is no office to pay for and no one between you and the person doing the work. Michael looks at your photos, gives you a straight number, and shows up with the same guys who quoted it. That lean setup is why the price is usually well under what the big names charge for the same shed, and why the schedule is usually this week, not next month.

What we take down

Sheds, decks, porches, fences, above-ground pools, swing sets and play sets, hot tubs and their surrounds, and interior tear-outs like cabinets, tile, drywall and non-load-bearing walls. We work by hand and with power tools, not heavy equipment, which keeps the price down and the yard intact. We do not take down whole buildings or anything structural.

How to get a price

Text a few photos of the shed, deck or fence to (475) 201-7539, including one that shows how to get a truck near it. Most teardowns can be priced from photos the same day. Bigger jobs get a free walk-through. See before and after photos of recent teardowns, or send photos through the quote form.
