How much does junk removal cost in Connecticut?

· by Michael Palmieri

Garage packed with boxes and tools before a junk removal job in Connecticut

Every week someone in Connecticut calls and asks the same first question: "What do you charge?" It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that there is no flat price for junk removal, because no two piles are the same. Whether you are in Shelton, Fairfield, Waterbury or Hartford, the same four things set the number. Here they are, so you know what to expect before you call.

The four things that set the price

1. Volume. How much room your stuff takes up in the truck is the biggest factor by far. A single couch is the low end. A garage that hasn't been cleared since the kids moved out is the high end. Everything else lands in between.

2. Weight. Transfer stations charge by the ton. A load of boxes and furniture is light. A load of concrete, shingles, tile, dirt or wet carpet is heavy, and that shows up in the disposal fee.

3. Access. Ground-level pickup from a driveway or open garage is fast. A third-floor walk-up, a narrow basement stairway, or a long carry across the yard takes more time and more hands.

4. Item type. Mattresses, box springs, tires, TVs, refrigerators and air conditioners all have special handling or recycling fees at the transfer station. Hot tubs have to be cut up before they move.

How to get a real number fast

Take a few photos with your phone and text them to (475) 201-7539 with your town. For most jobs that is enough to quote. If it is a full cleanout, an estate or a demolition, we will stop by, walk it with you and give you a firm number on the spot. The visit is free either way.

The number you get includes labor, loading, the truck, disposal fees and a sweep-up when we're done. There is no "fuel surcharge" or "heavy item fee" added on the day.

How to keep the price down

  • Group it. One trip with everything beats three small trips. If the basement and the garage both need attention, do them together.
  • Separate metal. Scrap metal is cheaper to get rid of than mixed junk. If old grills, bikes and shelving are in their own pile, it helps.
  • Keep the usable stuff usable. Furniture and housewares in decent shape go to donation instead of the dump. That saves disposal weight.
  • Tell us about stairs. We would rather know ahead of time than find out on the day.
  • Ask about the discount. Veterans, seniors and first responders get 15% off. Just mention it.

Is a dumpster cheaper?

For most household jobs, no. A dumpster rental charges for delivery, pickup, the rental period and the tonnage, and you still do all the lifting. We bring the labor and load everything in one visit. There is a separate post on dump runs versus dumpster rentals if you want the full comparison.
